Amnesty International

Amnesty International's Mission:

"We are people from across the world standing up for humanity and human rights. Our purpose is to protect people wherever justice, freedom, truth and dignity are denied. We investigate and expose abuses, educate and mobilize the public, and help transform societies to create a safer, more just world.

With more than 2.2 million supporters, activists and volunteers in over 150 countries, and complete independence from government, corporate or national interests, we work to protect human rights worldwide. Our vision is of a world in which every person - regardless of race, religion, gender, or ethnicity - enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards.

Founded in 1961, our organization has campaigned successfully in recent years for the International Criminal Court and a UN Torture Treaty. Through our research and action, governments have been persuaded to stop human rights violations and change their laws and practices. Death sentences have been commuted. Torturers have been brought to justice. And prisoners of conscience have been released. We ask you to join us - to take action and stop human rights abuses wherever they occur."

Teachers as Scholars

Teachers as Scholars (TAS), is an educational program which provides professional development seminars for K-12 teachers, led by respected University of Washington faculty. TAS seminars feed intellectual curiosity through in-depth inquiry, and support teachers in exploring and adapting new classroom material. TAS is sponsored jointly by the Simpson Center for the Humanities at the University of Washington and Seattle Arts & Lectures, in association with events presented by Pacific Science Center and the Seattle Human Rights Film Festival.

SHRFF is excited to announce a new partnership with Teachers As Scholars, through which select UW professors will hold local seminars on SHRFF film topics, and will also be welcomed as guest speakers for several of our 2009 films.

UW Global Health Resource Center

The Global Health Resource Center is the main networking vehicle for the UW Department of Global Health. The GHRC Advisory Board, with the faculty, staff, and student members from across campus, serves as a networking and UW community resource -- helping to inform the university and community about global health resources by coordinating activities, connecting individuals and catalyzing opportunities for international, interprofessional collaboration and exchange.

SHRFF will be working in partnership with the UW Global Health Resource Center and their World Health Cinema series to present our very first Global Health Symposium on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009. The event will feature a screening of the film One Water to be followed by a post-film Q&A discussion. We have invited a panel of experts and academics who will further educate and explore with audiences the critical global health and resource issues raised in One Water, a film which "celebrates the myriad ways which water has touched human lives around the world and leaves audiences with a fundamental question: Is water a human right or a commodity?"

American Civil Liberties Union

The ACLU of Washington is the nation's premiere organization dedicated to defending and expanding all civil liberties and civil rights in America. Our job is to conserve America's original civic values - the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights would only be well-meaning promises if people did not fight to protect it. The American democracy protects the individual from unwarranted arrest, search, prosecution and inhumane punishment. The ACLU-WA works to protect these guarantees, and ensure that government does not tread on the innocent or unjustly punish the guilty.

Bo M. Karlsson Foundation

The Bo M. Karlsson Foundation was established as the Bo M. Karlsson Scholarship Fund in 2004 before becoming a non-profit organization in 2007. After visiting Ama-Ghar Home in Nepal, Sonnia J. Karlsson realized the disadvantage that young women, in particular, have in pursuing higher education due to lack of funding or social/societal status. This new insight, along with her strong desire to honor her husband's memory and the conviction that one person can make a difference is how the BMK Scholarship Fund began to take shape. It has since grown into a foundation that supports women in their educational pursuits and character-building, as they become self-reliant, confident, and productive citizens in their own country.
